The famous Chinese-French artist has always been captivated by porcelain, the emblematic material linked to Chinese history and culture. But what did he find in this traditional art form that so intrigued him?

From an early age, Zao Wou-Ki was seduced by the luminosity and purity of porcelain. At the instigation of President Georges Pompidou, the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres opened its doors to contemporary creation and, in 1970, commissioned the artist to create the emblematic dinner plate for the Diane service. This collaboration marked the beginning of a bold artistic exploration.
Over the decades, Zao Wou-Ki continued his work with porcelain, collaborating in particular with the Bernardaud factory in Limoges. Freed from the constraints of Chinese tradition and Western conventions, the artist gave free rein to his creativity, exploring new artistic avenues on the immaculate surface of porcelain.

Martine Chazal, heritage curator and director of Scent and Symbolism at the UMAM in Hiroshima, offers us an illuminating look at this innovative period in Zao Wou-Ki's work.
