Not only has Normandy been the inspiration for many great artists, it has also been the birthplace and home of many famous figures. The Maison des Illustres (‘home of the famous’) label is awarded by the Ministry of Culture to the houses of famous people across France, and among those awarded in Normandy are the former homes of of Claude Monet, Jean-François Millet, Abbé Pierre, Gustave Flaubert and Christian Dior. A visit to any of these houses provides a fascinating insight into these individuals’ lives and the mark they made on history.
