Up for an action-packed day out in the city of Caen? We’ve put together quite the itinerary for you, and all just a ferry ride away across the Channel!

1.

Some puzzles to solve...

Start the day at 10am in front of Caen la Mer Tourist Office, where you can pick up your first clues for the Bourg Le Roy puzzle-solving walking trail that will take you through the old town of Caen. With each puzzle you will learn something new about the city! It’s a fun way to learn about the history of Caen.

Fish and chips anyone?

We reckon it will take you about two hours to complete the walking trail, by which point it might be a good idea to pop into Dolly’s. This is a unique little English corner of the city, where owner Colette, who has been there ‘for ever’, will dish you up some fabulous fish and chips, a cup of tea, or ‘a little bit of what ye fancy does ye good!’ Enjoy homemade, locally produced, often organic food, and several options for vegetarians and vegans, all surrounded by relics from England to make you feel right at home!

Afternoon on a Segway

After that, stagger out of Dolly’s and clamber onto a Segway for a tour of the city with a difference. After a few minutes’ explanation, you’re off on your way and in two hours can easily cover the main sites of the city, from Women’s Abbey at one end to the Men’s Abbey at the other! Not forgetting Caen Castle and the marina, of course.

A spot of magic

Riding a Segway is hard work – it’s time for another drink!* Head for the Moon and Sons pub, which opened in 2019 and just happens, as if by magic, to be next door to Dolly’s. Plunge into the world of Harry Potter and C.S Lewis, full of hippogriffs and house elves, witches and wardrobes and many other references besides. And be sure to try the butterbeer!

A home from home

Drop your cases off at the Clos Saint-Martin, a superb B&B just next to the Place Saint-Sauveur and the Men’s Abbey. A former town house dating back to the 16th century, this B&B boasts five bedrooms, each with their own character and colour scheme.
