Before the use of barbed wire or electric fences, farmers used to pleat the hedges on their farms. They intertwined the branches of the trees and shrubs in the hedge to give it greater solidity and form an almost impenetrable fence.
The hedges thus formed made it possible to keep livestock within the plots reserved for them, and prevent them from wandering off. Hedgerow wood was also used for many other purposes: firewood, making tools and utensils, and aromatic herbs. Creepers such as clematis and brambles were used to make baskets of all kinds.
