The Roule mountain, Cherbourg's guardian.
Come and discover the history of this promontory of the Armorican Massif, culminating at 117 m, as part of Pierres en lumières. It is one of Cherbourg's strongest symbols. It has watched over the city since medieval times. Successively hermitage, redoubt, fort and fortress, it is still owned by the French Navy. Access was via the plateau until the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, Cherbourgeois strolled along a small, bucolic path on the hillside (les petites rampes). The military built the large ramps (now Montée des résistants) to facilitate access to the summit for troops and military equipment.
After your visit, take advantage of the Musée de la Libération, which is open free of charge on Museum Night, with a wide range of activities on offer!
