Léon Gautier, the last veteran of the Kieffer commando, died on July 3 in his 101st year. Four days later, a national tribute was paid to him on the Ouistreham beach where he had landed 79 years earlier.
From his childhood in Rennes to his enlistment in the French Navy in February 1940, from the ruthless commando course at Achnaccary in Scotland to the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, Léon Gautier was imbued with great humility, never forgetting his fallen comrades at his side!
