The Atelier de Condé-en-Normandie brings together the media library and the Charles Léandre museum. Their respective missions are to provide access to reading material for as many people as possible, and to promote art through the presentation of a permanent collection of paintings and artists from Normandy.
In 2024, with the help of art historian Martine Baransky, the municipality has decided to strengthen and affirm the link between these two spaces, with an exhibition on the central theme of books and art.
The exhibition will be on view from March 23 to September 22, 2024.
The exhibition will explore the history of the book, from religious works to secular literature; it will present portraits of readers in relation to learning, knowledge and discovery, escaping into an imaginary world between the pages.
Paintings, sculptures, engravings, illustrated books, artists? books, photographs of writers reading, or in their libraries, book objects, beautiful bindings, pop-up books and flip books will all be on display, highlighting the major link between art and books. The works on loan come from the rich collections of Normandy?s various cultural structures (15 museums between Cherbourg and Fécamp, the Calvados Archives, the Alexis de Tocqueville media library, the Artothèque and the city of Caen), as well as from private collections. Artists and craftsmen from the region's book trade will also be taking part in the event.
