Exposition Albert Bergevin “Regards sensibles”

Major events,

AVRANCHES

To 08/03/2025

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his death, the town of Avranches presents a tribute to Albert Bergevin, an Avranches artist who left his mark on the town?s history throughout his life and right up to his death.

After training at the Julian and Ranson academies, Bergevin had a promising start to his career in Paris, where he rubbed shoulders with some of the great names in the art world (Maurice Denis and Sérusier were among his students). Nevertheless, dividing his time between Paris, Avranches and Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, Albert Bergevin continued to produce numerous works throughout his life: family and intimate scenes, landscapes of the Mont Saint-Michel bay, urban settings, fascination with fairground arts and the world of show business. He left an abundant body of work, mainly in the hands of private collectors, with around a hundred exhibited at the Musée d?art d?Avranches.

The exhibition brings together 140 paintings and drawings from public and private collections in nine stages:

> Self-portraits and workshops.
> Parisian life and the world of show business.
> Avranches, a privileged setting for inspiration.
> The family, an inexhaustible subject.
> The Bay of Mont Saint Michel, a vacation and contemplation setting.
> Bouquets, still lifes and animals.
> Landscapes.
> Circuses and showmen: nomadic life.
> A look at his contemporaries.

In June 2024, as the world celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Liberation, the exhibition will include a second section outside the walls of the Scriptorial, in the town itself, with the reproduction of extracts from the painter?s "notebooks" dating from the period 1939 to 1945. This illustrated diary, which he kept for the rest of his life, provides a vivid description of the world around him, and a moving account of the occupation, bombing and liberation of Avranches, which he experienced as a resident of one of the town?s historic districts.

The Albert Bergevin, regards sensibles exhibition is organized by the Avranches Scriptorial in collaboration with the Bergues museum, where it will be presented in 2025.
