On June 14, 1944, General De Gaulle landed at Graye-sur-Mer, then went on to Creully to meet Montgomery. He then headed for Bayeux to deliver his first speech on French soil. The enthusiastic welcome he received from the crowds was like a plebiscite. The French legitimized De Gaulle in the eyes of the Allies as the leader of liberated France. For the General, this visit was of the utmost importance. The aim was nothing less than to impose the authority of the Provisional Government of the French Republic. Before leaving again, De Gaulle entrusted Republic Commissioner François Coulet with the task of re-establishing republican legality on national soil. For the summer of 1944, Bayeux became the symbolic capital of the liberated territories, until the liberation of Paris on August 25.
As part of "Pierres en lumières", the ACC Normandie association and Mr. Leroy Xavier will stage General De Gaulle?s arrival in Bayeux on June 14, 1944, in a 19th-century mansion transformed into a 1944 setting, with re-enactors dressed in period costume.
The general and his staff, along with the head of the Bessin Resistance, Mr. Mercader Guillaume, will share with passers-by this very important moment in the aftermath of the June 6 landings.
A studio of allied journalists will be set up, as well as life scenes in various rooms of the house.
