On our recent trip to Rouen, my sister and I felt an irresistible urge to venture outside the city and explore the breathtaking surroundings of the Seine Valley. Opting for a guided kayak tour along the majestic River Seine, we embarked on an invigorating outdoor escapade, embracing the opportunity to connect with nature, indulge in scenic beauty and…treat our tastebuds to delectable local delights!
Paddle-Driven Bliss Along the River SEINE
Arriving at the Belbeuf nautical base, home to the local club “Pagaies en Seine”, we receive a warm welcome from Hugo and his team. After being provided with our safety vests and paddles, our guide for the day briefs us on the upcoming hour-long adventure, which involves navigating the dedicated water activity zone along the left arm of the Seine.
We’re just two and a half kilometers away from the Estival bar-restaurant along the Seine, our destination for a well-deserved break. The journey kicks off with an invigorating paddle against the current, making for a sporty start! Leah and I, working as a team, are reacquainting ourselves with tandem paddling. As we find our groove, navigating in perfect harmony on our two-seater kayak, the rhythmic beat of the Dragon Boat alongside sets the tempo. This traditional Chinese vessel, reminiscent of a canoe, opens up the Seine adventure to a larger group, making it an exciting and dynamic experience.
Hugo knows every nook and cranny of the river, keeping a watchful eye on the group. Midway, he takes us on a delightful detour, exploring the islands of the Seine between Ligard Island and Saint-Antoine Island, adding an extra touch of enchantment to our adventure. We’re pleasantly surprised by the abundance of birds, our companions on this immersive journey. We witness a majestic heron gracefully taking flight in the distance. Hugo informs us that we’re crossing a NATURA 2000 area, part of the network of protected zones in the European Union established to conserve biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources.
Just before reaching Estival, we come across a unique landmark: the troglodyte chapel of Saint-Adrien. Perched high above the Seine, it boasts the distinctive feature of being built… within the cliff. Truly impressive!
The Aperitif Interlude at Estival
In the distance, two white flags flutter by the Seine. “We’re almost there, just on time for aperitif. We’re going to dock right in front of Estival” gestures Hugo as we reach the charming riverside bar-restaurant. In France, the apéritif, or “apéro”, is a cherished social tradition that involves savouring both culinary delights and the pleasure of conviviality.
Perched on lofty wooden stools with the Seine unfolding before us, we order our drinks for a well-earned aperitif. Moments later, they arrive with generously topped appetizer platters. Santé! We clink glasses, savouring the moment and the unique setting by the river. An hour later, after relaxing and chatting with the Dragon Boat team, it’s time to set off again.
Paddling Back into the Sunset
The sun begins its descent. Gathering our gear, we glide over the water back to the starting point. Before us, the sky undergoes a mesmerizing transformation, painting hues of orange, pink and purple. The colours and reflections work their magic, adding a whole new dimension to the outing. Going with the flow, driven by the current, the return journey is easy and exhilarating. As the excursion concludes, so does the day, leaving us buzzing with excitement. We’ve had a delightful time and this unforgettable adventure has left us craving more! We will surely be back to experience the Dragon Boat!
