Looking for exciting hiking adventures during your holidays in Normandy? The GR® 223 trail from Cherbourg to Diélette offers an exhilarating escape into the stunning landscapes of La Manche. This enchanting four-day hike takes you through the unspoiled beauty of the Cotentin Peninsula, where dramatic cliffs meet the rolling sea and tranquil beaches await.

What we loved about it

The GR® 223 stretches from Isigny-sur-Mer to Mont-Saint-Michel, circling the Cotentin Peninsula. This section in the northwest of the peninsula is an excellent introduction for hikers seeking wide open spaces and stunning coastal landscapes. Starting from Cherbourg, the trail takes you through the breathtaking Cap de la Hague, the picturesque Bay of Ecalgrain, and the Nose of Jobourg, leading you to the beautiful beach of Siouville.

Day 1: From Cherbourg to Landemer (3 km)

After months of dreaming about this trip, the adventure begins! The train arrives in Cherbourg, an ideal short break destination to spend a few days enjoying the maritime city and its attractions, including the famous Cité de la Mer. For now, a leisurely lunch in Cherbourg provides a chance to recharge.

The visit continues at the Manufacture des Parapluies de Cherbourg, a true institution known for its exquisite craftsmanship and rich history. Founded in 1895, this iconic umbrella factory offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional techniques used to create these beautifully designed umbrellas, which are celebrated for their durability and style.

A bus ride on the Cap Cotentin line A from the Schuman-Delaville stop takes you directly to Urville-Nacqueville (Le Bourg stop). This is where it all begins! The first steps may feel a bit steep, but the path is short. On this first day, only 3 kilometres of walking are needed to reach our accommodation. For the more adventurous, the GR® 223 stretches 16 kilometres from the city centre of Cherbourg to Landemer. Once settled in, we head to the Pôle Nautique de la Hague to check out the activities such as sand yachting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or even kitesurfing.

  • Hotel-restaurant Le Landemer, for a premium experience, this hotel offers 9 beautifully appointed rooms, each boasting stunning sea views
  • Chambre d’hôtes L’Embéllie, in Urville-Nacqueville, a guesthouse offering a warm and family-friendly welcome, a cozy atmosphere that makes every guest feel at home.

  • Chambre d’hôtes L’Embéllie, in Urville-Nacqueville, a  guesthouse offering a table d’hôtes service available by reservation. Guests can enjoy a delightful dining experience featuring home-cooked meals made from fresh, local ingredients.

Day 2: From Landemer to Auderville (22 km)

After a delightful breakfast, the journey begins on the GR® 223, following the trail that hugs the coastline. The route is enjoyable, accompanied by the soothing sound of waves crashing nearby. Passing through enchanting woodlands, a fork in the path invites a brief diversion to the hamlet of Gruchy via the trail to the left (a 20-minute round trip). This detour allows for a visit to the birthplace of painter Jean-François Millet, now transformed into a charming museum.

Back on the coastal path, the maritime landscapes unfold, revealing impressive views of the sea and coastline. A stone wall, seemingly resting upon the rock, offers glimpses of Omonville-la-Rogue, adding an interesting feature to the landscape.

It’s time for lunch, as the morning’s hike has certainly worked up an appetite! After enjoying a delicious tasting of fresh fish at the café du Port, the journey continues. Following Omonville-la-Rogue, the GR® 223 winds its way between the sea on the right and pastures on the left. At a junction in Saint-Germain-des-Vaux, a detour down the rue des Casernes leads to a charming garden dedicated to Jacques Prévert, a renowned French poet and screenwriter who lived in the Cotentin, just a 10-minute walk away.

Back on the GR®, the pebble beaches stretch out ahead as the journey leads to the smallest port in France: Port-Racine! This charming spot offers a perfect vantage point for capturing memorable photographs. Continuing the walk, a bend in the path reveals the Goury lighthouse, which becomes a constant sight for the rest of the day. This iconic lighthouse will guide the way to the accommodation in Auderville, providing a reassuring presence as the adventure unfolds.

Day 3: From Auderville to Vauville (18 km)

Having heard so much about the wild coastline of Cotentin, particularly the Nez de Jobourg, there’s an exhilarating sense of anticipation as the GR® trail calls! Despite the faint ache in the calves from the earlier hike, any discomfort quickly fades into the background. Why? The magnificent coastal views unfold before the eyes, with the sun casting its golden glow over the landscape! A delightful surprise awaits with the natural gem of Baie d’Ecalgrain, where coasteering—a thrilling blend of climbing and swimming along the shore—offers an adventurous way to experience the area. Upon reaching the Nez de Jobourg, the visual feast begins ! The coastline appears dramatically sculpted by the waves, with the deep blue of the sea beautifully contrasting with the lush green pastures.

After a delicious lunch featuring local treats, the hike continues along the rugged terrain of the Cotentin’s western coast. The topoguide aptly describes this stretch as a “rollercoaster path,” and it quickly becomes clear why: the trail is filled with constant ups and downs. While challenging for the legs, these undulations reward hikers with breathtaking views of the sea below. After covering around ten kilometres, the path leads to Vauville, where a turn takes us towards our accommodation for a well-deserved rest before the final stage of the adventure. This late afternoon also provides the perfect opportunity to explore the Vauville Botanical Garden, a hidden gem that boasts thousands of exotic plants flourishing across 4.5 hectares, thanks to the area’s unique microclimate. It truly is an exceptional oasis!

Château de Vauville
  • L’Auberge des Grottes at Nez de Jobourg, offering quality cuisine and breathtaking views.
  • Les Tamarins, in Vauville, known for its wood-fired specialties of meat and fish.

Day 4: From Vauville to Siouville (13 km) or Diélette (16 km)

The fourth day of hiking promises to be different from the previous ones. After a few kilometres on a path through the countryside, the majestic Biville dunes appear—these sandy hills where the GR® continues alongside the beach and the sea. While trekking through the soft sand with its steep inclines can be challenging, the coastal atmosphere and tranquility of the landscape make it worthwhile. After climbing the dunes, the trail transitions into a forest path that winds inland. This variety of scenery is a joy, especially as the forest provides a refreshing break from the midday sun. By late morning, the breathtaking view of Siouville beach unfolds before us! The morning’s efforts have certainly worked up an appetite, and it’s only natural to settle down on the terrace of Le Baligan for a delicious homemade lunch.

In the afternoon, a different activity was chosen to cap off this seaside getaway: a surfing lesson at Siouville! This unique experience allows for a splash in the water after three days spent gazing at the sea. Although it would have been easy to catch the Cap Cotentin line B bus (stopping at Siouville – Place des Tamaris or Diélette – Gare Maritime) back to Cherbourg station (Schuman-Delaville stop, just 500 metres from the station), staying the night at the Hotel de la Falaise in Diélette seemed much more appealing. Thus, the nature escape comes to a close, leaving us both refreshed and rejuvenated. There’s only one thing on our minds: setting off again on the trails to uncover more hidden gems of Normandy!
