Whether it’s windy, drizzly, rainy or sunny, the Cotentin is one of those destinations that leave a lasting impression. It’s a beautiful peninsula that will simply blow you away! Around Cherbourg you’ll find a wide variety of landscapes. From the cliffs of the Nez de Jobourg to Tatihou Island, this trip to the north of the region will leave you with unforgettable memories.

Cherbourg, capital of the Cotentin

The port of Cherbourg

If you like coastal towns that are both lively and authentic, head to Cherbourg. Its artificial harbour, the second largest in the world, is pretty impressive. The town centre is a pleasant place to explore and relax. The Cité de la Mer is a must, with its monumental aquarium, the submarine Le Redoutable and the moving exhibition dedicated to the Titanic.

Land of Liberty!

Before heading to Cherbourg, you’ll probably be tempted to stop at Sainte-Mère-Eglise, with its much-photographed bell tower, and Utah Beach, one of the 5 D-Day Landing Beaches. There are a number of museums to discover, including the famous Airborne Museum.

A unique and fascinating tour of the Airborne Museum’s reserves, accompanied by the museum’s curator.

Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park

In 1991, the French government awarded the ‘Cotentin and Bessin Marshes Regional Natural Park’ title to this area of wetlands that stretches out across the Cotentin peninsula, flanked by the sea on either side.

Saint-Vaast, Tatihou Island and the Val de Saire

Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Tatihou Island are true gems. The two Vauban towers, built to protect the Cotentin peninsula from English invasion, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In summer, the town hosts a famous market and several festivals, including Les Traversées Tatihou, a unique folk music festival. Saint-Vaast was a big hit on television in 2019 and became Le Village Préféré des Français (France’s Favourite Village) that year.

Direction Tatihou, sur le bateau

The second highest lighthouse in Europe

In the Val de Saire, climb the 365 steps to the Gatteville lighthouse. It’s not far from the village of Barfleur, one of the most beautiful villages in France, a well-deserved accolade.

An artist’s retreat

Your artistic soul will undoubtedly lead you to this village, which has left its mark on the painter Jean-François Millet, who was born in the hamlet of Gruchy, or on the poet Jacques Prévert, whose house can be visited in Omonville-la-Petite. Not forgetting Landemer, so dear to Boris Vian.

Port Racine, one of France’s smallest harbours

Port Racine

During your weekend or holiday in the Cotentin region, you’ll be drawn like a magnet to Port Racine, a picture-postcard port. Located in Saint-Germain-des-Vaux, it’s well worth a visit!

Goury Lighthouse

A little further down the coast is the Goury lighthouse, from which you can see the Raz Blanchard, one of the strongest currents in Europe. If you want a front row seat on stormy days, this is the place to be (if you’re careful, of course).

The Vauville Botanical Garden and its tropical species

The oasis of the Cotentin! Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the warm Atlantic Ocean current, plants from distant latitudes thrive here in the Cotentin, at the Vauville Botanical Garden! Vauville is surrounded by vast expanses of moorland and wild heathland.

Dunes and more dunes

The scenery at Biville is simply breathtaking. The dunes that drop down to the sea are immense. This is a protected area. While the descent is accessible to all, the ascent requires a good level of fitness.

Sciotot Beach

The Sciotot beach or bay stretches from the Cap de Flamanville to the Cap du Rozel. Its fine sand attracts seaside lovers, families and water sports enthusiasts.

Barneville-Carteret

Did you enjoy the dunes of Biville? Then you’ll love the dunes of Hatainville! Your journey will take you to the ruins of a small church overlooking the sea. If you like the lively atmosphere of the small seaside resorts of La Manche, Barneville-Carteret is a must-see. In high season, you can take the Cotentin tourist train to the market.
