There are few adventure sports as exciting or adrenaline-fueled as coasteering. Imagine combining rock climbing, swimming, and cliff jumping, all while navigating the dramatic coastline. Intrigued by the thrill, my partner and I set off for the Baie d’Écalgrain on the Cotentin peninsula, eager to test our limits. Would we overcome our fear of heights, or would the cliffs prove too much? The only way to find out was to jump right in!

Activity Overview

Pauline and Max share their story

Coasteering is the perfect adventure for everyone

When my partner Maxime and I travel, we’re always on the lookout for new activities that offer a deeper understanding of the places we visit and a stronger connection with nature. During our trip to western Normandy, coasteering was high on our bucket list of trendy outdoor sports that combine adrenaline, exercise, and genuine exploration in a stunning natural setting.

One of the best things about coasteering is that it’s suitable for almost everyone, regardless of age or experience. It’s a thrilling mix of rock-hopping, wave-riding, shore-scrambling, cave-exploring, and yes, cliff-jumping. However, if you’re afraid of heights, you might want to think twice before trying it!

Guided by a Professional Lifeguard

On a beautiful yet breezy late-September day, we met Reinald, our guide and coasteering instructor, in the car park near the Baie d’Écalgrain, along with a small, friendly group. With our trusty lace-up trainers on, we were quickly kitted out in top-notch gear to ensure we stayed warm and safe: wetsuits, helmets, and lifejackets. Reinald, a professional lifeguard, took us through the safety instructions, stressing the importance of sticking together as a group, standing tall with arms crossed before diving in, and staying tuned to his tips along the way. His reassuring presence and expertise, combined with the supportive team spirit, instantly boosted our confidence and set the tone for an unforgettable adventure.

Discovering the untamed beauty of “Little Ireland”

The adventure begins as we step onto the shores of ‘Little Ireland,’ a place where nature’s raw beauty unfolds. We begin our walk along the seashore, crossing natural canals that few people ever get to experience. It’s a rare chance to explore a landscape like no other. The sound of waves crashing against the rocks, rolling over the pebbles, fills the air, while seagulls circle overhead, crying out in the wind. The fresh sea breeze brushes against our skin, and the rough rocks beneath our feet connect us to the earth. Every sense is awakened. It’s easy to see why this area of the Cotentin Peninsula, near the Nez de Jobourg, is called ‘Little Ireland.’ Its dramatic coastal cliffs, hidden bays, and lush, wild terrain closely resemble the rugged landscapes of Ireland itself.

A team adventure

We quickly learn that coasteering is all about navigating the coastline from varying heights, tackling a mix of natural obstacles, and using a range of skills. One moment, we’re scrambling over small rocks; the next, we’re leaping from towering cliffs into the deep blue below! That’s when I start to feel a wave of nerves. But, to my surprise, the youngest in the group, Baptiste, jumps in without a second thought! Reinald gently pushes us to step outside our comfort zones, advising us to stop overthinking and just go for it. And you know what? The moment I leap, it’s pure exhilaration! After that first jump, I’m hooked and ready to dive again. With the life jacket keeping me buoyant, I surface almost instantly and start floating, adrenaline still buzzing. Timing is everything when jumping, watching the waves carefully is crucial to avoid getting tossed around in Neptune’s own washing machine!

Adrenaline Rush Guaranteed

“Now we’ll be jumping from higher,” Reinald says, attaching a rope to a rock before guiding us into a quick descent. We knew coasteering involved high-adrenaline cliff dives, but now we’re facing a staggering 6-meter vertical plunge into the sea. Take a deep breath, exhale, and leap! The rush is incredible, leaving a sense of triumph and satisfaction. It’s not just the stunning Cotentin coastline that makes this experience unforgettable, but the feeling of accomplishment and the bond we share as a team that truly elevates the adventure.

With shifting tides, towering cliffs, and abundant wildlife, our first coasteering adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a thrilling journey that pushes your limits, immerses you in nature, and leaves you with a deep sense of accomplishment. All you need to bring is your sense of adventure—and prepare for an experience like no other!

Good to know!

We took on the activity in the stunning Baie d’Écalgrain (with a meeting in the bay parking) as it was appropriate with the weather conditions. One other breathtaking location can be chosen for this activity by the team: Omonville-la-Rogue (avec un rendez-vous sur le parking du port du hâble). Keep in mind that the chosen spot may shift depending on the weather and the participants’ experience.

As a water-based activity, swimming is definitely an integral part of coasteering. If you want to try coasteering but you think that your swimming ability might not be quite up to doing a more challenging trip, then our beginner’s session has got you covered.

The location is chosen based on weather conditions, the level of the participants and will be communicated no later than 24 hours before the outing.

All gear is provided: wetsuit, helmet, and life jacket.

What to bring: a swimsuit and towel, old shorts (to protect the wetsuit), worn-in sneakers, and something warm to change into after the adventure.
