During the period from 1940 to 1945, Rose Valland (1898-1980), a humble employee of the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris, played a crucial role in the restitution of works of art looted by the Nazis to Jewish families after the war. The extraordinary destiny and exemplary courage of this woman, who did her utmost to remain discreet, are brought to light by historian Jennifer Lesieur.

No one noticed the discreet Rose Valland when, in 1940, the organization in charge of confiscating works of art belonging to Jewish families delivered 400 crates to the Musée du Jeu de Paume. Among the crates were 100,000 priceless works, from which Marshal Goering selected those he wanted for his personal collection.

Shocked by this situation, Rose Valland expresses her indignation in a constrained silence in this Gestapo-run museum. Unwittingly, she became a spy, discreetly taking note of arrivals and references of stored and exhibited paintings, as well as information on their owners and destinations. By the time of the Liberation, her work had led to the location of 60,000 of these paintings and the return of 45,000.
