Between France and Cameroon in the 50s, a discreet woman's life is crossed by a brief stroke of madness, a secret romance.
Using a period photograph, the narrator recounts the story of her aunt, a discreet and melancholy beauty of the 50s. Born into a modest family of market gardeners from Nantes, Madeleine followed her husband to work in Cameroon. She finds herself transplanted to a world at the antipodes of her own, violent and magnificent. In Douala, during a ball at the Delegation, she falls in love with Yves Prigent, half-administrator, half-adventurer. Whenever he's passing through, they stroll together along the port or allée des Cocotiers. But decolonization is on the march, heralding the end of the game: soon, the milieu of Douala?s little whites will have to pack up? Tautly woven between the post-war province and a semi-dreamt-of Africa, "Une façon d?aimer" speaks of the weight of marriages of reason and the grace of certain encounters. Through infinitely delicate touches, a memory, a melody by Guy Béart, verses by André Hardellet, the full depth of a woman?s life is revealed.
