MAUVES-SUR-HUISNE

21/09/2024

Situated at the top of the village of Mauves-sur-Huisne, with a spectacular view over the Huisne valley, the oldest parts of Saint Pierre church date back to the 12th century: round apse with Romanesque windows and Romanesque choir. The original, handsome bell tower has a Romanesque base and rises from a square mass with double corner buttresses terminating in flamboyant hooked pinnacles.
It has a Latin cross plan, with chapels added in the 17th century, including one by Goëvrot, physician to King François 1st of France. The church was listed as a historic monument in 1975.
Highlights include a 12th-century baptismal font and capital, a fine Louis XV-style carved wooden pulpit, and a painting of the Holy Family by Murillo, a copy donated by the French government.
