The Maison Vacquerie-Musée Victor Hugo presents a special exhibition based on Victor Hugo's famous novel Les Travailleurs de la mer.
Written entirely during his exile in Guernsey, this "epic of the ocean and progress" (Marc Eigeldinger) was largely inspired by the poet?s living environment, as he had been living on the Channel Island for eleven years when it was published in 1866. Indeed, it was to this "rock of hospitality and freedom" that the poet dedicated his novel. Although the maritime motif is already present in Hugol?s work, Les Travailleurs de la mer is the work that most fully captures his island exile. It is also to this literary work that Victor Hugo would add his most important graphic work.
This exhibition plunges visitors into the heart of this sublime Romantic drama, from its conception to its critical success, through numerous manuscripts, drawings, engravings and period newspapers, many of them from the museum?s collections.
Exhibition from May 18 to September 29
Guided tours and lectures are planned.
