This exhibition showcases the variety of tools used in the old big forges before they all but disappeared in the 19th century. These forges were powered exclusively by hydraulic energy from the rivers. The ever-increasing need for iron and steel heralded the industrial era. The expression "cingler le renard" ("to scour the fox") comes from the process of transforming the large, one-ton bars of cast iron from the blast furnace into 20-kilo steel bars. Thanks to the invaluable skills of blacksmiths, foundrymen and refiners, iron and cast iron were produced in large quantities. From simple knives to the gates of the Château de Versailles, all this iron was worked by gigantic hammers and impressive pincers!
Tools and artefacts from various collections are exceptionally brought together for this temporary exhibition.
