Screening of the silent film Notre-Dame de Paris, accompanied by improvisations by Jean-Baptiste MONNOT, titular of the Abbey of Saint-Ouen in ROUEN.
From Victor HUGO's 1831 novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, Wallace WORSLEY produced an adaptation released in 1923 (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame), which met with enormous success. In the 15th century, under the reign of Louis XI, the square in front of Notre-Dame is the main venue for the annual Fête des Fous. Quasimodo, the hunchbacked orphan, lives in the towers of Notre-Dame; he is raised by the tyrannical Frollo in the cathedral, and tries to open up to the world with the beautiful Esmeralda and the soldier Phoebus. But Frollo doesn't see it that way?
This film is a masterpiece. The actors are marvelous: in the lead role, Lon Chaney (nearly a hundred films), Patsy Ruth Miller, who brings all her ardor to the character of Esmeralda? The make-up is a great success. The 10-hectare sets are exceptional. The shots from the towers, and the crowd movements (2000 extras) are impressive?
