On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, several historic sites are open to the public and you can take part in a number of guided tours:

>> V1 site at Bois de la Vierge
A V1 base hidden away in a peaceful wood, yet a dramatic site during its construction in the spring of 1944. Soviet and Polish deportees from the Buchenwald concentration camp were assigned to its construction.
Yvon DECAYEUX, member of the LPO, the Conservatoire des espaces naturels and the Aumale Heritage Association, will give guided tours of the site.

>> Abbaye Saint Martin :
The abbey site has been located in Aumale on the left bank of the Bresle since the end of the 10th century. The main façade still bears the Normandy coat of arms and the arms of its last patrons, the Princes of Bourbon, Dukes of Maine and Aumale.
Open house Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Guided tours Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 pm / 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm

>> Le grand Hostel :
A former coaching inn built in the 16th and 17th centuries on a medieval cellar, the Grand Hostel d'Aumale features architectural elements representative of the different periods in its history. The guided tour will introduce you to the various interior and exterior spaces, and the people associated with the site, the history of Aumale and, in some cases, the great history of France. An original way to discover an unsuspected and surprising site in the heart of the town.

>>La Halle au Beurre and its prisons :
Typical Normandy architecture built on the site of the prétoire, the jurisdiction of the duchy of Aumale in the 16th century, remains the symbol of Aumalois commerce.
On-site: Exhibition of works by Aumalois artist Marie-Bernadette Poindefer (1931-2011)/
Free guided tours on Saturday and Sunday from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

>> Town Hall :
Beautiful 16th-century brick and stone building housing a 19th-century collection of Aumale earthenware. The collection recalls the existence of two earthenware factories in the commune between 1811 and 1834.
An exceptional exhibition of works by Aumale-born caricaturist Alfred Le Petit.
Free guided tours on Saturday and Sunday from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

>> Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
Construction of this Gothic-style edifice began in 1508 and continued throughout the 16th century. It was completed in 1608. Admire the polychrome hanging keystones, wall frescoes, an organ dating from before 1550, stained glass windows, sculptures, wood panelling and beautiful hanging keystones depicting figures.
Free guided tours (subject to church services) from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

>> Chapelle du Cardonnoy :
According to legend, a monk from Auchy found a statue of the Virgin Mary in a field overgrown with thistles. He takes it back to his abbey. The following day, the Madonna disappeared and returned to her field of "cardoons": the construction of a chapel was then decided in this location. Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have continued to flock to this sanctuary.
