Vimoutiers, Sunday the 20th August 1944: the Battle of Normandy is drawing to a close.
The Chambois-Falaise Pocket, where the German troops are
surrounded, is about to be closed down by the Allies.
On the 29th August 1944 a few German tanks find themselves with no alternative but to make a detour along the main road from Vimoutiers to Gacé. One of them, a type E Tiger, comes to a full stop on the way out of Vimoutiers, having run out of fuel. Its
crew sabotage it with two explosive charges.

Classed as an Historic Monument in 1975. One of only six such tanks.
