Normandy is a well-known mountain biking destination for the variety of its landscapes and great trails options. Whether it’s family-friendly rides on flat terrain or more challenging mountain biking on rugged terrain you’re after, all five of Normandy’s départements offer stunning cycle routes and mountain biking trails to suit all abilities.
The Calvados département is one of the ‘must ride’ areas for mountain biking. It features several mountain bike sites, some of which are labelled by the French Cyclotourism Federation, such as in the bocage virois or the valleys of the Suisse Normande for more challenging riding. Whether you’re an adrenaline-seeking speed addict, a cross country fanatic craving a leg-stretching long ride, or simply want to experience off-road biking in a beautiful and inspiring environment — the Eure département has got the mountain biking trails for you, such as the Chemin des sources bleues trail in Aizier or the Chemin du Rossignol in Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle. The Manche département offers a striking collection of cycling and mountain biking opportunities, with more than 100 mountain bike trails that showcase the area’s diverse landscapes from Tatihou to the Mont-Saint-Michel, via Saint-Lô or Villedieu-Les-Poêles. La gare ferroviaire
Mise en service le 22 mars 1847 par la Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à la mer, la première gare du Havre est édifiée dans le prolongement de la ligne Rouen-Paris inaugurée en 1843. Cette ligne directe relie le port à la capitale et permet aux Parisiens de rejoindre plus facilement la mer, contribuant à la popularité des stations balnéaires de la côte d’Albâtre.
En 1881, une nouvelle gare est édifiée sur les plans de Juste Lisch. Les quais d’embarquement sont modernisés et une grande verrière est construite sur le modèle de la gare Saint-Lazare à Paris pour protéger les voyageurs des intempéries. Cette vaste structure métallique est conservée quand la façade est remplacée en 1932 par l’architecte Henri Pacon. Construit en béton, ce nouveau hall se caractérise par son style Art déco, sobre et géométrique. Il était complété par un beffroi qui a été détruit en 1963 pour améliorer la circulation routière du carrefour. La tour-horloge en acier, érigée en 2000, évoque son souvenir.
Dépassez la gare et prenez le cours Lafayette puis la passerelle Hubert Raoul-Duval pour rejoindre un ancien quartier portuaire réhabilité en zone d’activités fourmillante.
