Normandy is a well-known mountain biking destination for the variety of its landscapes and great trails options. Whether it’s family-friendly rides on flat terrain or more challenging mountain biking on rugged terrain you’re after, all five of Normandy’s départements offer stunning cycle routes and mountain biking trails to suit all abilities.
The Calvados département is one of the ‘must ride’ areas for mountain biking. It features several mountain bike sites, some of which are labelled by the French Cyclotourism Federation, such as in the bocage virois or the valleys of the Suisse Normande for more challenging riding. Whether you’re an adrenaline-seeking speed addict, a cross country fanatic craving a leg-stretching long ride, or simply want to experience off-road biking in a beautiful and inspiring environment — the Eure département has got the mountain biking trails for you, such as the Chemin des sources bleues trail in Aizier or the Chemin du Rossignol in Saint-Philbert-sur-Risle. The Manche département offers a striking collection of cycling and mountain biking opportunities, with more than 100 mountain bike trails that showcase the area’s diverse landscapes from Tatihou to the Mont-Saint-Michel, via Saint-Lô or Villedieu-Les-Poêles. Palais de Justice
De l’hôtel de ville à la gare, le large boulevard de Strasbourg, ouvert au 19e siècle à l’emplacement des fortifications, met en scène le statut et la richesse de la cité à l’époque en plein développement. Maisons de commerce ou sièges de compagnies maritimes jalonnent la spacieuse artère, tout comme l’imposant palais de justice du Havre.
Trop petit, l’ancien palais de justice du Havre, actuel Muséum d’histoire naturelle (cf. notice n°14), ne répondait plus aux besoins d’une ville en pleine croissance démographique. Le nouveau est inauguré boulevard de Strasbourg en 1876. Construit sur les plans de l’architecte parisien Jules Désiré Bourdais, l’édifice de style néo-classique se caractérise par son fronton triangulaire et ses colonnes dignes d’un temple grec.
Deux statues en bronze de David d’Angers, représentant deux figures de la littérature havraise, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre et Casimir Delavigne, sont installées de part et d’autre de l’escalier d’entrée.
A côté du palais de justice, s’élève un immeuble au caractère opulent et bourgeois surnommé « Fort Chabrol ». Commandé à l’architecte William Cargill en 1900, il témoigne de la réussite de l’industriel havrais Alexandre Boucher, directeur des Usines métallurgiques franco-russes. Il fait sculpter les armoiries du Havre et de Saint-Pétersbourg au-dessus de la porte d’entrée, située rue Eyriès.
