The French National Archives hold eight school notebooks containing 4600 contact prints of photographs taken in Spain by Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and "Chim" between May 1937 and January 1939. While research has clarified the attribution of the images to the three photographers, the provenance and circulation of the notebooks remain elusive.
In this talk, Sandrine Bula, head of the Photographic Mission at the Archives nationales, and Emilie Charrier, documentary researcher at the Archives nationales, will discuss the questions that still surround the conditions of entry of these photographs into the Archives nationales, and reveal their largely unpublished content.
