A symbol of France, Camembert is part of our daily gourmet diet. In the space of two centuries, it has become so familiar to us that it is considered part of our national gastronomic heritage. This local product, representing a certain popular side beyond our borders, paradoxically expresses French refinement. In 1791, during the French Revolution, Camembert was born in the Manoir de Beaumoncel, a stone's throw from here, from the meeting of a refractory priest and an Augeronne farmer: Marie Harel.
By restoring an 18th-early 19th-century building in the heart of the village, the Maison du Camembert offers a showcase for the most emblematic of French cheeses, and pays tribute to Marie Harel at the historic birthplace of this great saga.
Extend your visit to the Beaumoncel cheese dairy to discover the different stages in the making of Camembert de Normandie, thanks to the bay windows that plunge you into the heart of the workshops. From hand-molding to maturing cellars and packaging, Camembert will hold no secrets for you.
At the end of your visit, for a gourmet conclusion, you'll be offered a plate with 3 slices of Camembert to compare all types of Camembert (pasteurized, thermized, raw, etc.).
