On September 5, 1798, the Jourdan law made military service compulsory. All French men aged 20 were required to perform five years' military service. Over the years, this conscription system was adapted by means of new regulations: recruitment procedures were rapidly modified, with the introduction of the Conseil de Révision and the drawing of lots, and the length of service was regularly modified, reaching ten months in 1997. At the same time, conscription was suspended and replaced by a "journée d?appel de préparation à la défense".
In this workshop, you will discover all the sources used to trace the military career of these young men, and learn more about their history, personalities, physical appearance and more.
