Le Souvenir Français - Comité de Cherbourg offers a guided tour of the cemetery, with a panorama of key events in local, national and international history.
The cemetery, with its graves and monuments, bears witness to the local and international events of the 19th and 20th centuries that left their mark on Cherbourg (shipwrecks, wars, political upheavals, conquests and colonial interventions). It includes a military plot with 670 graves from all the conflicts of the 20th century (French, Belgian, Serbian and Portuguese graves), a Commonwealth military plot and 3 monuments erected by public subscription. Cherbourg is the only European site officially recognized as a US Civil War battlefield (monument to sailors killed in naval combat between the CSS Alabama and the USS Kearsarge off Cherbourg in 1864). Numerous graves of local and national personalities
