At the time of the Liberation, more than 20,000 French women were accused of "horizontal collaboration" with the occupying forces, and were subjected to a brutal and arbitrary punishment: public shearing in the squares of liberated towns. This practice, widespread throughout the country, raises questions about its symbolic meaning. The poignant accounts of these women bear witness to the horror they experienced and the humiliation inflicted, resulting in persistent trauma that affects subsequent generations and makes their reintegration difficult.
