When my friends and I decided to swap our usual routine for an adventurous short break in Normandy, we knew the Suisse Normande was the perfect destination. Nestled just south of Caen, this enchanting hilly region promised a mix of stunning landscapes and heart-pumping activities. From hiking scenic trails to tackling and gliding along peaceful rivers in a canoe, we were ready to embrace the outdoors, even as total amateurs! Little did we know, this sporty escape would bring as many laughs as it did thrills.

A hike to get the muscles warmed up

At 10 a.m., we set off from the village of Le Vey, ready for the first adventure of the day: the Pain de Sucre – Rochers des Parcs hike. This 9 km loop through the Suisse Normande offers a perfect combination of nature and breathtaking views. As we trek along the forest paths, the tranquility of the surroundings is a welcome contrast to the busyness of daily life. After a couple of kilometers, we reach the cliff’s summit, where the sweeping views of Clécy and the Orne river loops take our breath away. We pause for a moment to soak in the scenery and snap a few photos, then continue on toward the Crêtes road, a well-known spot for paragliding enthusiasts. The hike is both invigorating and peaceful, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead.

On Top of Suisse Normande

A few kilometers later, we find ourselves on the other side of the valley, breathing in the fresh air. With its endless valleys and sprawling meadows, Suisse Normande truly lives up to its name. Behind us, a few paragliders are preparing for takeoff, adding a sense of adventure to the landscape. But the hike isn’t over yet. We make our way toward the Rochers des Parcs, where the steep path makes for a challenging ascent. Reaching the summit, we’re treated to an incredible view: below us, the viaduct and the banks of the Orne River stretch out. The feeling of escape is complete.

Via Ferrata: Climbing Along the Rocks

After a refreshing lunch at a guinguette in Clécy, we head to the via ferrata route, where Paul, the manager, meets us. Equipped with helmets and harnesses, we start the 25-meter vertical climb. Matthieu and Nathan lead the way, and I follow, encouraged by my friends. Reaching the ledge, the stunning view of the Orne makes it all worthwhile. The course offers beams, wooden bridges, and monkey bridges, and we complete it in under an hour. Next, we tackle the zip line. Antoine sets me up, and I zoom down, enjoying the landscape rushing by as I reach the valley floor.

Sleeping in a Cocoon

After an action-packed day, there’s nothing better than retreating into the cozy comfort of your accommodation. We head to the gîte where we’ll be spending the night. We immediately fall in love with this cozy vacation home nestled in nature. And the cherry on top? A relaxing spa experience. The evening’s plan is simple: a barbecue followed by a soothing relaxation session.

Canoeing down the Orne River

Week-end sportif entre amis en suisse normande, canoë

The next day, after a lovely breakfast on the terrace, we leave our cozy retreat and head to the Thury Plein Air kayaking base for a canoe excursion on the Orne. We meet Olivier, also known as “Ice,” our guide for the day. After gearing up, we set off from the launch point at Saint-Rémy-sur-Orne. Paddling along, the breathtaking landscapes of the Suisse Normande unfold before us. The conditions are perfect for a smooth journey. At one point, we pass through a narrow “slipway” between two white buoys, just in front of the Pont de la Mousse. Taking turns, we navigate the tight spot with a few swift strokes. Soon, we reach the end of the route, where a hilarious water battle breaks out. We all end up soaked to the bone! Whether on water, land, or in the air, the Suisse Normande has definitely offered us some memorable surprises.
