Activity Overview
A group of friends share their story
A 1.5-hour walk along the tidal flats
Arriving in Agon-Coutainville, we’re immediately captivated by this charming, family-friendly seaside resort in La Manche, which has managed to retain its authentic character. With our holiday base just nearby, we’ve gathered our group for this unforgettable adventure. We climb aboard a one-of-a-kind vehicle that feels like a quirky blend of a tractor and a comfortable amphibious coach! Gently, we roll along the estran, the vast stretch of land revealed as the tide recedes. We pass through the passous and over rocky barriers that protect the homes from the powerful surges of high tides. With 350 kilometers of coastline, La Manche experiences tidal coefficients that can reach an impressive 120, causing the sea to sometimes pull back over a kilometer. Agon Beach, famous for its tidal fishing, offers a bounty of clams, cockles, and woodcock clams, making it a true haven for sea lovers.

A rhythmic parade of tractors moving across the sand
After passing through a remote area, we spot the first rows of bouchot poles stretching out as far as the eye can see, their flawless alignment resembling an art installation. We follow the same route taken daily by the hardworking fishermen. Forty-five companies harvest mussels here, while another twenty focus on oysters. The mollusks flourish, nourished by the nutrient-rich waters brought in by the river and the sea.

Fresh oysters, no matter the season?
Our guide explains that mussels are collected in August before being sold, clearing space on the bouchot poles for the juvenile oysters to grow, despite the constant threat from their two main predators: periwinkles and seabream. Oyster bags are regularly turned on their racks and shaken vigorously. Although oysters can now be enjoyed year-round, they still have a traditional season. Oysters are typically consumed from September to April, the months with an “r.” From May to August, however, the oysters reproduce, and during this period, they are known as “milky” oysters.
A Feast Set Amidst the Tidal Flats
It’s well known that the sea air works up an appetite! The perfect reward to end our walk: Hervé leads us to a buffet set up right in the heart of the tidal flats, with an endless view. A delightful culinary interlude, where we savour shellfish, oysters, and fish rillettes, all accompanied by a traditional glass of white wine (in moderation). We hardly noticed the time passing!
