Amid the rhythmic clinking of bobbing boat masts and the cheerful calls of seagulls, the fishing harbour of Fecamp beckons as an ideal starting point for a sea adventure. Accompanied by my two energetic boys, Marius and Octave, we set off for a thrilling day aboard the tall ship Mil’Pat. Join us as we recount the highlights of this unforgettable maritime journey!

Asterix, Captain of the Mil’Pat

Meet Asterix, the charismatic captain of the Mil’Pat, who takes visitors on an exhilarating two-hour journey along the stunning Normandy coastline. With his infectious passion for sailing, Asterix shares captivating stories of the sea while navigating aboard this majestic tall ship.

Boarding the Mil’Pat Tall Ship and meeting the Captain

Eager to embark on this exciting adventure, we spot the silhouette of the tall ship moored at the end of Quai Vauban in Fécamp’s harbour. Octave’s eyes sparkle with excitement as he exclaims, “Wow, it looks like a pirate ship!” And he’s right, the vessel is truly impressive, boasting an azure blue hull and gleaming wooden masts. As we board this former lobster fishing boat from Guilvinec in Brittany, we are warmly welcomed by Captain Asterix. With his distinctive moustache, suspenders, beret, and cheerful demeanor, he perfectly embodies the mariner we had always imagined.

Setting Sail

Once aboard the deck, it’s time to meet the crew. Each participant introduces themselves in turn, and we find ourselves among a small group of ten eager sailors. Today, Vincent, Lionel, and Jean will be coordinating the crew’s activities. Moments later, we feel a gentle movement as the engine of the old tall ship roars to life. The adventure is officially underway.

All Hands on Deck!

As we set sail, every crew member has the chance to engage in various onboard duties. Marius is invited to the control cabin to take the helm, guided by the captain’s instructions. It’s an exciting moment as he grasps the wheel, confidently looking out toward the horizon. Meanwhile, the captain gathers us on deck for the important task of hoisting the mainsail, signaling the start of our journey. With clear commands, we work together to pull on the halyards, watching the sails unfurl and fill with wind, propelling us forward through the water.

Sailing along the cliffs of the Alabaster Coast

As we sail out of the harbour, the breathtaking panoramic view of the Alabaster Coast’s cliffs unfolds before us, a truly dramatic landscape! Our course is set towards Yport, but the wind is a bit gentle today. Captain Asterix seizes the opportunity for some hands-on training and calls on Marius and Octave to assist in hoisting the brown sail at the front of the boat. Together, they pull on the ropes, eager to harness more of the wind’s incredible power. With all sails unfurled, we feel the boat pick up speed, and the adventure continues!

Fishing from the boat

With all the sails unfurled, the boat glides gracefully across the calm waters, creating the perfect setting for a fishing adventure. Vincent skillfully casts the lines, and within moments, we notice a twitch in one of them. In one fluid motion, Vincent raises the rod, and to our delight, he hauls in an impressive catch: three mackerels at once. Excitedly, he hands them over to Octave, who can hardly contain his joy at the thought of these delicious, fresh fish gracing his dinner plate. It’s a thrilling experience for our little gourmet, who can’t wait to enjoy this catch!

Heartfelt Connections on the Open Sea

The weather stays calm, giving Astérix the chance to step out of his cabin and spend time with us, his new crew. At the back of the boat, there’s plenty of laughter as he and his team share their love for the sea. But time on the water passes quickly, and it’s soon time to head back. Together, we’ll carry out one final maneuver, tacking (turning the boat around), before making a steady return to Fécamp’s harbour, taking home plenty of great memories.
