Jean and his passion for History

Jean greets us outside the boutique du Holdy in the village of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, in the Manche departement. His Jeep is idling in front of the church, setting the tone for what’s to come. From the start, it’s clear we’re in the company of someone deeply steeped in history. His enthusiasm is contagious, and within five minutes, despite the drizzle, we’re laughing together as if we’ve known him for years. It all feels so easy and natural. With his helmet firmly in place, Jean launches into his stories, his animated tone drawing us in. “I’m Swiss,” he explains. Though not a professional historian, he’s developed his own approach to sharing the past. “History is an investigation,” he says. “I love digging deep, uncovering the memories of those who lived through the war. I might even challenge some of your preconceived ideas.“

A Farm turned into a Museum

We drop our luggage at Jean’s place. He and his wife have opened a bed and breakfast or “chambres d’hôtes” to accommodate visitors to the region. The house, once occupied by the Germans, now exudes an incredible sense of peace. Our immersion into the Second World War begins the moment we pass through the gate.

Jean leads us to the old barn, now transformed into a “forward post” of the German army.“That’s a gun rack,” comes the explanation as we gaze at the rifles neatly lined up along the wall. Every detail of the exhibit is carefully curated, drawing us deeper into the past. Later, the four of us head to the nearby restaurant Chez Arsène for dinner. The setting is stunning, with its ancient stone buildings and expansive park. The warm welcome, the inviting atmosphere, and the exquisite dishes, it’s a perfect evening.

A Breakfast set in a 1940s atmosphere

After a restful night, we’re eager to enjoy breakfast at the café épicerie. Jean and his wife greet us warmly with smiles, and the moment we step inside, we’re transported back in time. The sound of 1940s music fills the air, vintage posters adorn the walls, and enamel pots and blue work overalls hang from the coat hooks… it’s like stepping into another era, and you have to see it to truly believe it.As we sip our coffee, we begin reminiscing about our childhoods, but soon the conversation shifts to history. Jean, a true history enthusiast, brings the past to life with stories that are both captivating and thought-provoking. He doesn’t just recount events; he reflects on the reasons behind wars and their lasting economic effects. Meanwhile, Jean-Jacques keeps us entertained with his witty quotes from 1950s films – his memory is remarkable!

Before we know it, it’s time to hop into the Jeep and trace the footsteps of the 101st Airborne Division. The morning is bitterly cold, but thankfully, we’ve come prepared with warm clothing. The wind is relentless, but it doesn’t matter, I’m just thrilled to be riding in this vintage Jeep. As a car enthusiast, this is a dream come true.

A Ride to Utah Beach in a Classic WILLYS Jeep

The comfort aboard the Jeep is basic, especially for someone like me, standing at 1.90 meters tall! After bumping along the winding lanes of the Cotentin bocage, we find ourselves speeding down a small country road (the Jeep struggles to hit 40 km/h!). Jean sticks his hand out the window to operate the windshield wiper – we can’t help but laugh at the sight. We’re following the trail of the 101st Airborne, the American paratroopers who landed near Utah Beach, one of the five D-Day beaches.

Jean pauses along the way, enriching our experience with stories from civilians and accounts from American soldiers. He shows us numerous photos taken right here in June 1944, images of parachute drops and crash sites. We stop at a small parking area, and the rain has finally stopped. The sky, full of rolling clouds, is breathtaking, and a rainbow arcs above the sea. It’s then that I think of my grandfather, who was taken prisoner not far from here. Time passes, but the memory endures.
