On 6 June 1944, soldiers from all over the world landed on the Normandy coast. A number of hotels and farmhouses were liberated from the Occupation and sometimes even hosted emblematic figures of the D-Day Landings. You too can stay in a selection of these places marked by the history of the D-DAY.
01
Le Spirit of 1944 (Calvados)
Located between the German cemetery of La Cambe, the Pointe du Hoc and Omaha Beach, the Spirit of 1944 immerses you in the atmosphere of the 1940s. You’ll sleep in an environment steeped in history, with war posters and paraphernalia. You might even be lulled to sleep by a Glenn Miller tune.
02
Les chambres du Blockhaus (Calvados)
During your stay here, you will have the opportunity to visit the blockhouse built into the house. Liberated by British troops in 1944, it offers a panoramic view of Sword Beach, which you can also enjoy from a terrace overlooking the sea.
03
The Lion d’Or in the footsteps of Eisenhower (Calvados)
The headquarters of the British press in 1944, the Lion d’Or also had the honour of hosting Eisenhower. Now a 3-star hotel, it is ideally located for visiting the sites near Bayeux and the D-Day Landing Beaches of course.
04
DDay Aviators (Calvados)
The owner of the DDAY Aviators hotel in the heart of Arromanches is a passionate aviation enthusiast. She tells her guests little D-Day stories and presents her exceptional collection of objects, including various aircraft wings and the cockpit of a C47, installed in the breakfast room. In the lounge, you’ll find an exceptional cellar that opens by magic! Every detail has been meticulously researched.
05
Le Domaine Airborne (Manche)
The farmhouse of the estate offers a pied-à-terre just a few kilometres from the beaches of Utah and Omaha. You’ll sleep where dozens of German soldiers took up residence before American paratroopers moved in during the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944.
06
The château de Canisy (Manche)
A true place of remembrance, the Château de Canisy is used to welcoming American military governors and veterans to commemorate D-Day. Thanks to its strong links with the United States, it has hosted personalities such as Henry Kissinger, US Secretary of State from 1973 to 1976. A German by birth and of Jewish faith, he fled Nazi Germany in 1938 before becoming a naturalised American in 1943.
07
The Chateau de Colombières, former American headquarters (Calvados)
What if you spent the night in an American headquarters from the Second World War? Occupied until June 1944, the château was spared the bombings. Once liberated, it was chosen as the headquarters for an American press centre. The château now offers bed and breakfast accommodation.
08
The Château de Vouilly (Calvados)
This is the last American HQ where you can stay overnight. A press camp between 10 June and 10 August 1944, the castle was a strategic location during the war. Many war correspondents covered the fightings here, including Robert Capa, Ernest Hemingway and Ernie Pyle. Close to the D-Day Landing Beaches, it is now a beautiful 4-star hotel.
09
B&B Les Vignets and its museum (Calvados)
Another option to spend the night in the heart of Omaha Beach. This time, to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the 1940s and the memories of the war, come and discover the civilian museum “before, during and after the war”. Run by the owners of the B&B, it contains a wealth of objects relating to the daily life of soldiers and local people at the time.
10
La batterie du Holdy (Manche)
Once occupied by German soldiers, this bed and breakfast plunges you into the world of the Second World War from its doorstep. In his farmhouse, the owner has reconstructed a German army outpost and decorated it to perfection. A history buff himself, he offers you the chance to explore Utah Beach and the Airborne compound in a vintage jeep. The next morning you can enjoy breakfast in the 1940s style café-grocery. Unforgettable!
11
Le Clos des Tilleuls La Vendelée (Manche)
This time we take you to a former German headquarters. Used as an observation post during the Second World War, the guesthouse continued to be used by the Allies after the liberation. Its proximity to the coast and the D-Day Landing Beaches makes it the perfect base from which to retrace the history of 6 June 1944.
12
Les granges Pelloquin (Calvados)
Not far from Juno Beach, in Bernières-sur-Mer, a stay steeped in history awaits you in a former 18th century farmhouse. During the D-Day landings, the property was converted into a field hospital for Canadian, British and German civilians and soldiers. The rooms have been tastefully renovated. You’ll love the fireplace and the bay windows, which create a particularly warm atmosphere.
