Looking for a unique way to experience Normandy, my husband Félix and I decided to explore the iconic D-Day Landing Beaches on electric fat-bikes. With our guide Laurent from the nearby Pôle Sports de Nature, we set off on the stunning and historic Omaha Beach for an unforgettable morning. Fat bikes are specially designed off-road adventure bikes with wide tires, perfect for tackling challenging terrain like sand!

Following in the Footsteps of Heroes
It’s 9am when we arrive at the Pôle Sports de Nature in Colleville-sur-Mer, greeted by Laurent, our enthusiastic guide for the morning. After a warm welcome, we meet our fellow adventurers: Herveline, Valérie, and Patrick, all eager to get started. Laurent introduces us to our ride for the day electric fat-bikes. “These bikes, originally from North America, are equipped with wide tyres that make them perfect for tackling all kinds of terrain, especially sand,” he explains. Excitement builds as we prepare to ride along the historic Omaha Beach, an adventure that promises to be both thrilling and unforgettable.
We start by cycling past the impressive steel sculpture, Les Braves, on the beach. With Laurent’s guidance, we shift gears and feel the electric motor propel us forward. A few pedal strokes, and we quickly pick up speed, cruising at 20 km/h. The excitement is palpable! The landscape is stunning: to the right, the vast ocean stretches out; to the left, charming seaside homes; and straight ahead, the majestic cliffs we’re heading towards. It’s the ideal mix of adventure and breathtaking views.

A history lesson with a difference!
We dismount and continue on foot for a short distance. After a few minutes, we reach a lookout point. Below us, we have a clear view of the D-Day Landing Beaches, with Omaha Beach stretching eastward, and further beyond, the artificial port at Arromanches. Félix and I take a moment to snap a selfie before heading down to blockhouse Wn 73, located just below. In the darkness, Laurent uses a video projector to illuminate the walls of this former defensive structure, sharing maps and photos of those who experienced the D-Day Landings. It’s fascinating, but just the beginning!
We then head back down to the beach and hop on our fat bikes, heading toward bunker Wn 65. We race for several kilometers, the wind in our hair! Félix proves to be a bit more skilled at this than I am, crossing the finish line in front of the bunker first. Laurent explains that this bunker served as a stronghold for German artillery during the Landings. With its 75mm cannon still in place, this concrete structure makes quite an impression.

A Movie Session in a Blockhouse
Before finishing our guided tour, we head towards the Wn 62 blockhouse, which overlooks the beach. The place is shrouded in mystery, with traces shaped like the letter S on the walls, left by the Germans. A few moments later, our guide pulls out his tablet and portable speaker. He plays several clips from films about D-Day, giving us a vivid sense of what the Allies experienced on the morning of June 6, 1944. The emotion in the air is palpable. This unique movie session concludes our journey back in time. We all thank Laurent for his kindness and the depth of his insights. Thanks to him, we’ve had an unforgettable day.
