Crossing the Bay of the Mont-Saint-Michel is a unique experience! Choose a classic or unusual guided walk.

Spotlight on the Bay

The Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel has the highest tides in continental Europe. Certain days of the year are more suitable for observing this phenomenon. When the tidal range exceeds 110, the Mount becomes an island again for a few hours. At the same time, the amplitude of the tides also reveals tens of thousands of hectares of beaches, mudflats and sandbanks. The Bay is made up of rocky islands (The Mount itself and Tombelaine), cliffs, dunes, salt marshes and wet meadows. Its ecosystem is exceptional. Birds, fish and salt marsh sheep thrive here. It’s easy to see why this magnificent area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Guided walking tour of the Bay

Before making this unforgettable crossing, it is essential to hire a guide, as it is very dangerous to venture into the bay alone. In the Middle Ages, pilgrims were legion. Along with Rome and Compostela, the Mount was one of the most important pilgrimage destinations. Today, walkers of all ages cross the bay with no religious motivation other than communion with Mother Nature! You’ll have plenty of time to observe the exceptional flora and fauna. Some of the starting points for this unforgettable walk are in Genêts or Le Bec d’Andaine. Other routes take you to the foot of the Mount. Now for a practical question: what kind of footwear do you need for the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay walk? You can either go barefoot or wear flip-flops.

Into the Wild: Crossing the Bay of the Mont-Saint-Michel on foot

To recharge our batteries as a family, we opted for an unforgettable crossing of the Bay of the Mont-Saint-Michel, accompanied by Sylvie, our guide.

Classic or unusual, but always sensational!

The crossing times depend on the tides. The bay has the highest tides in continental Europe. It’s much more than a walk… Walking barefoot in the sand, mud, rivers and creeks to reach the Mount is a thrill. Along the way, you’ll certainly come close to the Rocher de Tombelaine, surrounded by legends. From the classic crossing to the more unusual (at sunset, with a passage through quicksand), each guide will be able to offer you the formula that suits you best. There is no (or almost no) age limit for this crossing, so don’t hesitate to share this moment with friends or family!
