There are moments in life when we need to pause, reconnect with ourselves, and truly listen to our bodies. Meditative walking offers a simple yet powerful way to achieve this, combining movement with mindful breathing to promote relaxation and well-being. With its proven ability to lower stress and boost health, it’s a practice worth embracing. And what better setting for this revitalizing experience than the awe-inspiring Bay of the Mont-Saint-Michel, where every step brings you closer to nature’s beauty and serenity?

Activity Overview
Sylvie and her husband Patrick share their story
Escaping the Summer Crowds
Ever felt the need to escape the everyday grind? My husband and I were yearning for an off-the-grid adventure, something daring and away from the usual crowds. Our destination? The Mont-Saint-Michel. But visiting one of France’s most iconic landmarks in the height of summer, while avoiding throngs of tourists, seemed like a challenge.
Arriving at Bec d’Andaine, the starting point for a crossing to this legendary UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a feast for the senses. Vast stretches of sand and gently rolling dunes unfold before us, with the majestic Mont-Saint-Michel standing nearby, its presence almost within reach. Kicking off my shoes, I step into the wet sand, letting its cool, soft texture envelop my feet – until my feet began to sink! It’s such an odd sensation, and a vivid reminder of the bay’s infamous quicksands, which have claimed unwary pilgrims’ lives since medieval times. Chastened, I chose caution over curiosity and stayed put, eager for our guide to arrive before venturing any further into this mesmerizing, yet treacherous, landscape.

A gentle warm-up together
We meet our friendly guide, Myriam, in the car park at Dragey-Ronthon Beach. Myriam is a sophrologist who teaches self-development techniques, using the connection between body and mind to foster greater balance and harmony. In a calm, soothing voice, she introduces us to the concept of meditative walking, an art unfamiliar to us, stressed-out urban dwellers. Inspired by the nomadic tribes who once travelled great distances to lead their livestock to fresh grazing grounds, the practice – also known as Afghan walking- focuses on conscious walking—breathing and moving with mindfulness. This method helps oxygenate the body efficiently, enabling long-distance travel, sometimes covering up to 60 km a day.
The session begins with some gentle stretching to warm up the soft tissues, increase blood flow, and deliver much-needed oxygen to every part of the body before we set off on the walk. “Feel free to yawn, sigh, shake out your arms and legs, and release any tension,” advises Myriam. With that, we’re fully prepared for this new adventure!

Clearing the mind and boosting energy levels
We are introduced to a breathing technique that differs from our natural rhythm. At first, it feels awkward to learn such a basic skill, but we are consciously preparing our bodies for optimal oxygenation. After all, our aim is to master the art of conscious walking. As the walk begins, we are encouraged to focus on the Mont-Saint-Michel in the distance, allowing us to find the right pacing and to perfect the technique of breathing through our noses.
We walk, inhaling for three seconds, holding our breath for one, and exhaling for three. At first, it requires focus with every step, but soon, breathing becomes second nature. As we continue, we begin to feel the calming effects, becoming more attuned to the ground beneath our feet and appreciating the stunning landscape around us. It’s easy to see why this practice is often described as ‘active meditation.’ We conclude our experience by relaxing on the beach, feeling more energized than ever before!

A Well-Deserved Snack after the session
After our Afghan walking session, we continue our conversation over a delicious meal at La Pause des Genêts, with the Mont-Saint-Michel still in our sights, far on the horizon. Nearby, cows and their calves graze peacefully in a field. The enclosed garden exudes a serene calm. As for the dishes, crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients, they are an absolute delight. This day feels like an enchanted interlude, a true bubble of wellbeing, allowing us to reconnect with nature, our breath, and the present moment.
