Quicksand Encounters: a Barefoot Experience Like No Other

After waking to the rooster’s call, we set off with our backpacks and arrived on time for our meeting with Sylvie, our certified guide in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. While the bay is open to exploration, it’s safer to know the site well or be accompanied by an expert to avoid its pitfalls. Sylvie captivates us all, adults and children alike, by sharing the history of the Mont, Tombelaine rock, and the bay through the centuries. She invites us to taste plants she picks from the ground and points out a group of migratory birds overhead. She explains the quicksand phenomenon in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel and demonstrates how to escape its grip. Sylvie also introduces us to the Angel’s Wing shell, telling us, “If you find one half and later discover the other, you’ll become an angel yourself,” a local legend passed down through generations.
