Activity Overview
Eloïse shares her story
Heading to the Etretat Nautical Centre
As an avid sports enthusiast, I’ve been eager to try stand-up paddle boarding against the breathtaking backdrop of Normandy’s Alabaster Coast. With its stunning coastline, Étretat is a bucket list destination, perfect for combining my love of the great outdoors with an active adventure! Les Voiles et Galets d’Étretat watersports centre organizes group outings that allow you to explore the cliffs and natural arches in a truly unique way. The scenery here is simply spectacular!
A few guidelines before we hit the water
Upon arrival, I’m introduced to the other participants: two mothers, their two teenagers, and a young girl. One of the wonderful things about stand-up paddle boarding is that it’s a family activity everyone can enjoy, regardless of age or skill level. Dressed in wetsuits and sturdy booties for the water, we grab our paddles. Before we set off on our adventure, the instructors provide a comprehensive safety briefing on the white pebble beach. We learn about water safety, the specifics of the location, how to launch and land, as well as the fundamentals of forward paddling, turning, and balancing techniques.

A Dreamy Backdrop!
After the briefing, it’s time to practise on our boards in the water. I start in a kneeling position, taking a few strokes on each side of the board. Gradually, I stand up in the middle of the board and find my balance, keeping a slight bend in my knees and my core centred over the board. Drifting away from the shore at my own pace, I soak up the dramatic scenery of this incredible outdoor sculpture gallery, carved by Mother Nature. Before me, the magnificent soaring cliffs, the natural arch resembling an elephant’s trunk known as the Porte d’Aval, and the pointed rock rising from the sea behind it, the Needle, leave me utterly awestruck. The wow factor is guaranteed!
Guided Tour around the legendary arches of Etretat

A few paddle strokes later, the entire group starts to settle into a comfortable rhythm on their boards. As we glide across the water, we delve into the fascinating history of Étretat, its iconic arches, towering cliffs, and even its hidden treasures, including tales of French kings. The sheer height of the cliffs is astonishing, and the view is absolutely breathtaking. We then set our sights on the Porte d’Aval. After just a few metres, as we paddle along, the interior of the cliffs gradually reveals itself before us. It’s a truly magical experience!
The adventure on the water continues as the group approaches another arch, wider and known as the Manneporte. Everyone savours this moment, taking in the stunning scenery all around. They paddle along the beaches, always accompanied by the majestic presence of the cliffs. The sensation of gliding gently over the water is truly enchanting. As we return to shore, there’s a shared sense of longing to experience it all again!
