Activity Overview
Nicolle, her daughter and grandson share their story
From William the Conqueror…
Before we begin our embroidery workshop, we take a moment to visit the Bayeux Tapestry Museum. While not included in the workshop price, it’s an essential stop to truly appreciate the art of embroidery and marvel at this UNESCO-listed masterpiece. With audio guides in hand, we follow the dramatic tale of the Battle of Hastings and the coronation of William the Conqueror as we explore the 71-meter-long tapestry. The illuminated display cases reveal the intricate details of each scene, from drakkar ships and knights in chain mail to mythical creatures and fierce battle moments. It’s a fascinating glimpse into history and the skill behind this extraordinary piece of art.

…to Game of Thrones
We discover that the Bayeux Tapestry continues to inspire artists worldwide and is often hailed as “the very first comic strip.” Its storytelling technique, used in the 11th century, is remarkable for its graphic modernity, echoing the visual storytelling we see in cinema and animation today. It’s no surprise that Northern Ireland, the backdrop for much of Game of Thrones, was so influenced by it that in 2019, its tourism board created their own 77-meter-long tapestry! This connection doesn’t go unnoticed by Bastien, a huge fan of the show.
The Bayeux Stitch in the 21st Century: A Craft That Transcends Time
After our visit to the iconic Bayeux Tapestry, we’re excited to try our hand at some embroidery ourselves! Just across the street from the Bayeux Tapestry Museum lies Bayeux Broderie, a charming shop and workshop run by Chantal James, a master embroiderer and one of the few artisans skilled in the historic Bayeux stitch. We begin by choosing our designs. Bastien picks a tree, Fanny goes for a battle scene, and I opt for a drakkar ship. Each kit includes a pre-designed linen canvas, wool, a needle, an embroidery hoop, and detailed instructions. Chantal guides us through each step, starting with the stem stitch. As we dive in, Bastien focuses intently on the tree trunk, while Chantal teaches us the straight stitch technique. It’s tricky at first, stretching the threads, making sure the needle goes in and out on the same side, but after some concentration, we begin to get the hang of it. The patience and precision required are immense, but the sense of accomplishment as we see our stitches take shape is truly rewarding.

Focused Creativity: A Family Bonding Experience
The beauty of the Bayeux stitch lies in its simplicity and accessibility, making it a perfect introduction to embroidery. According to Chantal James, its unique technique offers excellent coverage, allowing for quick and satisfying results, even for beginners. It’s no wonder she welcomes participants as young as nine to explore this craft.
Our session begins with canvases stretched taut over embroidery hoops, each featuring a design of our choice. Chantal walks us through the process step by step, her calm guidance enhancing the meditative rhythm of stitching. Unlike other techniques, the Bayeux stitch feels both forgiving and relaxing, which my daughter Fanny, an embroidery enthusiast, quickly points out. After two hours of focused creativity, we’ve each completed a small section of our designs. It’s a humble beginning compared to the monumental Bayeux Tapestry, but the progress feels immensely rewarding. Best of all, we leave with our kits in hand, ready to continue our stitching journey at home.

Hands-On with History
As the workshop concludes, we’re all left with a profound sense of connection—not just to the craft itself but to the rich history it represents. My daughter captures it perfectly: “It feels like we’ve touched a piece of the past and become part of William the Conqueror’s story.” For me, it’s a moment of pride in mastering this timeless technique, even if only in part. And Bastien, who had been reluctant to join at first, surprises us all by admitting he loved the experience, especially sharing it as a family. This is more than just embroidery; it’s a journey through time, a creative adventure, and a memory we’ll cherish together.
