Guided walk with commentary

Guided and narrated walks – Combining nature, history and an immersive experience at the heart of D-Day

Lovers of the great outdoors, join Normandy Explorations to explore the D-Day beaches and the Normandy countryside on foot, accompanied by a certified local guide.

My walks combine the pleasure of walking in the great outdoors with an in-depth historical exploration of the events of June 1944, particularly in the American sector (Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Pointe du Hoc, Sainte-Mère-Église). These walks also take in some of Normandy’s most iconic sites, such as Étretat, Honfleur and Mont Saint-Michel. They are aimed at walking enthusiasts, history buffs and anyone wishing to discover Normandy in a different way, away from the usual tourist routes.

As you make your way through forests, dunes, unspoilt beaches, country lanes and cliff-top paths, you’ll discover an authentic Normandy, with varied and sometimes spectacular landscapes.

In the footsteps of the American GIs: history at first hand

Hiking offers a unique perspective on the history of the D-Day landings. It allows you to follow the paths and routes taken by American soldiers in June 1944, and to understand the difficulties they faced.

As you walk, the historical and contextual explanations come into their own: the terrain, the vegetation, the distances, the natural obstacles and the military positions all become elements that help you better understand how the operations unfolded.

Visitors thus discover the events through a detailed reading of the terrain, linking historical facts to the very places where they took place.

Little-known sites and remarkable landscapes

My walks provide access to historic sites that are sometimes difficult, or even impossible, to reach during a standard visit by car.

But the appeal of these walks is not limited to military history. Walking also offers the chance to fully appreciate the diversity of Normandy’s landscapes:

Forests and woodland paths, to discover unspoilt areas and understand the role of vegetation in military operations.

The dunes and natural coastal areas, to explore wild landscapes and observe the unique features of the terrain.

The D-Day beaches, to walk right alongside these historic sites and discover their natural surroundings.

The paths along the top of the cliffs, offering spectacular views of the sea, the beaches and the former battlefields.

Lesser-known paths and sites, to discover places off the beaten track, away from the traditional tourist routes.

Each itinerary offers an opportunity to combine historical discovery, landscape appreciation and the pleasure of walking.

An accurate, vivid and contextualised historical account

Being accompanied by a certified local guide allows you to go far beyond a simple guided walk.

The explanations cover the events of the D-Day landings, the units involved, the military objectives, the strategies, the difficulties encountered and the consequences of the fighting.

The exploration takes place directly on the ground, observing the landscapes and positions, to understand how the geography influenced the course of operations.

Particular attention is paid to lesser-known sites and details that provide a deeper understanding of local history, the fighting and the men who took part.

The aim is to offer an enriching, accessible and lively experience, tailored to the participants’ interests.

An experience enhanced by aerial immersion

Where weather, regulatory and operational conditions permit, certain walks can be combined with a visual immersion experience using a drone.

This approach provides a complementary perspective on the landscapes, terrain and layout of the area, and helps visitors to better visualise certain aspects of the historical context.

The combination of exploring on foot, the guide’s explanations and aerial immersion offers a unique experience, blending observation of the terrain with an understanding of historical events.

This option is subject to the site’s capabilities, weather conditions and compliance with applicable regulations.

Itineraries tailored to participants’ preferences and fitness levels

Each walk can be tailored to suit the time available, participants’ interests and their fitness levels.

The tours may focus on:

An in-depth historical exploration of the D-Day sites.

A nature walk through the coastal landscapes and the Normandy countryside.

The exploration of little-known historic sites and less-travelled paths.

A combination of historical discovery, panoramic views and aerial perspectives where possible.

The duration, route and pace are determined according to visitors’ expectations and the characteristics of the terrain.

What should you bring for the walk?

To make the most of the experience, we recommend bringing:

Walking boots suitable for paths, sand and any changes in elevation.

Comfortable clothing suitable for the season.

A windproof and waterproof jacket in case of rain or wind, particularly along the coast and on the cliffs.

Water and a light snack for longer outings.

Clothing that allows you to adapt to changing weather conditions.
