Monuments Men" temporary exhibition

The Wednesday 14 October at 10 a.m00

Overlord Museum Lotissement Omaha Center 14710 COLLEVILLE-SUR-MER

Overlord Museum and AWAY FROM HOME are pleased to present an exhibition devoted to the history of the "Monuments Men": a group of art experts – historians, curators, architects, artists, archivists and academics – integrated into the armed forces of the Liberation with the aim of protecting, saving and restoring the cultural heritage threatened by the war.

Conceived as a chronological journey, the exhibition traces the origins and actions of this “art commando”, born in reaction to the endangerment of Europe’s heritage and the looting of art collections by the Nazi regime. Through a series of portraits – including those of the French Resistance fighter Rose Valland and the American officer James Rorimer – and a selection of objects illustrating their careers, the exhibition highlights the perilous mission of the soldiers of heritage and their allies on the “art front”.
As part of an approach to heritage and remembrance, at the crossroads of the arts and history, the exhibition also highlights the inter-allied undertaking to find and return looted property, and the commitment of these men and women driven by a spirit of peace, reconstruction and renewed dialogue between peoples.

Exhibition curator: Mattéo Grouard
