Run free on the beach and dive into real-life History
In Normandy, history comes alive as children learn about the Second World War in the classroom, igniting their curiosity with countless questions. What better way to deepen their understanding than to visit the historic sites of the D-Day landings? The breathtaking landscapes, with their expansive sandy beaches framed by gentle cliffs, provide the perfect backdrop for exploration.
As we arrive, we’re greeted by a low tide, revealing vast stretches of sand. The children eagerly run across the beach, their laughter echoing as they circle the first caisson, a remnant of the artificial port, exposed by the retreating waves. This blend of outdoor adventure and historical discovery allows them to connect with the past in a tangible way, transforming their learning experience into an inspiring journey through time.
The D-Day Museum to understand the Operation of the Artificial Port
Nothing beats a visit to the D-Day Museum, perfectly located in the heart of town with breathtaking views of the sea. The highlight is the captivating 3D animation that illustrates the workings of the Mulberry Harbour, an innovative artificial port designed to facilitate the Allied invasion during World War II. Constructed from floating roadways and pier heads, the Mulberry Harbour allowed troops, vehicles, and supplies to land safely on the beaches of Normandy, even amidst rough seas. This modern museum invites visitors to connect with history in an inspiring way. The exhibits foster a deep appreciation for the bravery and ingenuity of those who fought for freedom, all while standing on the very shores where history was made.
A photogenic mural and a circular cinema
Before embarking on a brisk walk to Arromanches 360, there’s a moment to pause and reflect in front of the poignant mural that reads, “Please, no more war, Love.” The urgency of our pose is fitting, as the mural sits at a sharp bend, reminding us of the fragile nature of peace. Once at Arromanches 360, the circular cinema envelops us in the visceral realities of the Battle of Normandy, offering an immersive experience that evokes deep emotions. This powerful depiction serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in history.
For those seeking to explore further, a 1.5 km heritage trail awaits, inviting walkers to connect with the land and its stories in a tranquil setting. Allow about 45 minutes to fully appreciate the history etched into every step.
Cycle a scenic stretch of the Vélomaritime
In the afternoon, we rally the family and set off on a bike ride to the Longues-sur-Mer Battery, just 6 km away. This significant site is part of the Atlantic Wall, a key defensive structure from World War II. The route is safe and well-marked, making it perfect for a leisurely ride. What’s even better is that Loc Vélo delivered our bikes directly to our accommodation, adding a touch of convenience to our adventure. With the wind in our hair and the stunning Normandy scenery all around, it’s a wonderful way to explore this historic area together!
Land sailing at Gold Beach
The next morning, we decide to try a new activity, land sailing on the beach of Asnelles, also known by its code name, Gold Beach. For two exhilarating hours, we learn the ropes alongside a qualified instructor, feeling the rush of the wind as we glide across the sandy expanse. The sensations of sailing on the golden sand are truly amazing, creating a perfect blend of thrill and joy.
