[Scolaires] Centre Juno Beach
Thanks to its interactive and dynamic approach, the Juno Beach Centre is an ideal place to introduce your pupils to the history of the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy through the role played by Canadians.
Its educational mission, dedicated to preserving historical memory, is led by young Canadian guides. It aims to offer young people a rich experience, both on a personal and educational level, and encourages reflection on citizenship, peace and the world today through an exploration of Canada’s role during the war.
Focused on history and geography, moral and civic education, as well as modern languages and the environment, the Juno Beach Centre’s educational programme offers a Canadian teaching approach tailored to the French school curriculum.
There are several options available:
– Self-guided tour of the museum: The Juno Beach Centre’s permanent exhibition presents Canada’s civilian and military war effort and the various fronts during the Second World War, across seven exhibition rooms. The temporary exhibition ‘My Childhood, 1939–1945’ immerses visitors in the experiences of children from Normandy and Canada during the Second World War.
– The ‘Explore Juno’ classroom activity: ‘What was life like in Canada during the Second World War?’: Working in teams of 5–6, pupils have around 45 minutes to search for information in the museum. As they move through the galleries, they complete games on a touchscreen tablet and collect ‘poppy points’. At the end of the tour, gathered around the guide, pupils tally up their points on a shared screen and share what they have learnt with the other teams, before concluding with topics related to Canada and the world today.
– The ‘Remembering to Act’ activity: This activity aims to encourage pupils to reflect on past and present challenges relating to
the preservation of peace, in order to raise their awareness of issues of remembrance and sustainable development.
– Guided tour of the bunkers at Juno Park: The guided tour of the bunkers at Juno Park offers an insight into the evolution of the
Atlantic Wall defences and the history of the Canadian landings on Juno Beach.
