[Schoolchildren] The Belle Époque Villas Tour of Caen
Have you ever noticed the Belle Époque villas on the Bagatelle hillside? You’ll discover their history and their incredible décor through this discovery trail, which combines observation and photo challenges!
The architectural treasure hunt begins with a discovery walk along the Bagatelle hillside, a neighbourhood that sprang up at the end of the 19th century. We then step into the Belle Époque, a period rich in progress and inventions. City-dwellers at that time were seeking fresh air and modernity. In Caen, eclectic villas were built on the Bagatelle hillside, blending colours, materials and styles. But why so much decoration? Who lived in these villas? And what was life like back then?
Working in teams, the young people set off in search of architectural details hidden away in the neighbourhood’s villas. For each detail, they’ll also have to complete a photo challenge, without letting the other teams get ahead of them!
We’ll finish this treasure hunt in a peaceful and little-known spot: the quiet Quatre-Nations cemetery.
