Carville is the region’s last born climbing site…
Here, we offer you Clécy’s little sister! The forty metre-high Carville cliff offers a recreational climb for beginners or experienced climbers alike. All site equipment is recent, for it was installed just over 10 years ago by the Vire Valley section of the Club Alpin Français (French mountain sports club), located in Saint-Lô, around 30km from Carville. Throughout the year, the site is regularly used by club members and by climbing enthusiasts from throughout the region.
The cliff is located in the village of Carville, between Vire and Saint-Lô. To reach the cliff site, follow directions for Vire, at exit 40 off the A84 motorway.
After driving through the village of Campeaux, turn left towards Bény-Bocage, on the road that runs along the banks of the River Vire. At the end of this road, turn right, then after 300 metres, take the narrow road to the right. The climbing site is around 500 metres away, on the roadside. Car parking is available under the cliff, on the side of the road.
This easily accessible natural site offers the advantage of a few 2-pitch routes of up to 40 metres. Generally, routes are accessible and 70% of them are graded 5 or less. The 75 currently equipped routes range from grade 2 to 7a+. They are perfectly equipped to COSIRIC standards, with screws and chains instead of belays. A few routes nevertheless require top roping.
Most of the route names are noted at the foot. This south-facing cliff can be very hot in the summer. It also offers the advantage of drying quickly after showers, thanks to the nature of the rock face.
From the top of the routes, you can admire the meanders of the Vire through the bocage countryside, with its verdant fields and plots.
