5 years of Franciscaines – Les ateliers de la nrf : À vos plumes !

With the Ateliers de la NRF – writing workshops run by Éditions Gallimard – you can enter the world of a writer at work, discover his or her working techniques and compare them with your own practice, around a chosen theme.

On the programme, 5 guest writers will share their experience, their methods and their view of literature, in a spirit of kindness and high standards:

François-Henri Désérable – Writing the journey
When you return from a trip, what is left but a few scattered, uncertain memories that gradually fade from your memory? The novelist suggests we learn to give their weight of ink and paper to the landscapes, faces and sensations that cross our travels, with the ability to fix the dilation of time that passes, and the sharp eye of the traveller who takes up the pen.

Fabienne Jacob – Writing characters
The novelist proposes to draw from the infinite pool of characters in novels over the centuries, the ‘nobodies’ as well as the heroes, listening to the voices of the authors who created them. The aim will be to invent your own character, with his or her body, dreams, shortcomings, disillusions and desires, along with the enigma that will make you want to get to know him or her, and follow them to the last page.

Sylvain Prudhomme – Writing from a photograph
A souvenir photo of an unforgettable moment, a face loved or hated, a place gone forever, a lost object, a photograph is a powerful trigger for writing. The writer proposes to explore the fascinating variety of avenues for writing based on the emotion generated by an encounter with images that move you.

Nicolas Fargues – Writing for affirmation
The pleasure of writing comes not so much from a flood of words dropped from the gods of inspiration as from patient work, sentence after sentence, to bring one’s own
language. By working on the exercise of portraiture or setting the scene, the novelist will help to get rid of tics of language and conventional language to allow a personal point of view to emerge, supported by fresh images. In short, his own style.

Maylis de Kerangal – Writing the places of the novel
How do the places in fiction, real or invented, physical and sensory places, poetic sources, help to shape the language of the novel – to give it its ‘landscape’? Each student will work on a short text based on a specific place, suggested if necessary by Maylis de Kerangal, to explore with her the ways in which places can shape the narrative.
places can shape the narrative.

Registration for the whole day. Places limited to 12 per workshop.
