In her bedroom, a young journalist watches footage on repeat of an accident that claimed the life of the (yes, %AB the %BB!) greatest Formula 1 driver, Avi Quin. She wants to know more and begins an investigation… From then on, characters begin to appear. They are drivers, engineers, and journalists. The world of F1 takes over her room, which is transformed, in turn, into a paddock, a TV studio, or a courtroom.
The inspiration behind this play is the accident involving Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna during a Grand Prix on May 1, 1994, and the questions raised by the champion’s death. Juliette Fribourg examines this sport, which continues to stir up passions—equally intense—among its supporters and detractors. The questions are there, posed bluntly, including the ecological absurdity and anachronism inherent in this circus-like spectacle—a “show” that continues even when death strikes the lead actor…
In response to these questions, Juliette Fribourg introduces an unprecedented female presence into what is arguably the most masculine sport in existence (only two women have ever competed in a Grand Prix in over a hundred years!). She creates a fictional female driver, thereby revealing a surprisingly irreverent behind-the-scenes perspective. A feminine take on F1, set in a soundscape where the roar of the engines (or “music,” as the fans call it) echoes like a litany, as haunting as the journalist’s frenzied thirst for knowledge.
