Théâtre marionnettes : Richard 3

The Thursday 07 January at 20 a.m00

Boulevard de Normandie Le Cadran 27000 EVREUX

It’s all there in this reimagined Shakespearean classic: the feud between families, boundless ambition, diabolical strategy, the rise and fall of the tyrant, his madness, and his excesses. Richard III is ugly, wicked, hunchbacked, lame, and %AB determined %BB to be a scoundrel. He orders the murders of his brothers and imprisons their children before killing them. In his eyes, those around him—whether relatives or enemies—are nothing more than puppets, even if they are of royal or princely blood. He deceives, schemes, and… manipulates.

Yoann Pencole? took the word literally and made the tyrant the only human character in his show. Surrounding him are not actors, but life-size puppets brought to life by three dancer-puppeteers, while two voice actors provide their lines. And this artistic choice works perfectly.

In this faithful yet entirely original staging, the art of puppetry—accompanied by dance—reinforces the character’s loneliness and misanthropy by highlighting the power of the text. In these scenes of great visual beauty, Richard III appears more misanthropic than ever, even more alone—desperately alone—at the mercy of his own excess.

A production presented by Tangram, the national theater company
Introductory workshop on puppetry on Wednesday, January 6, at 6:30 p.m.
