Théâtre : la religieuse
The Thursday 11 March at 20 a.m00
Théâtre Legendre 27000 EVREUX
A large drape hanging from the curtain rods covers the back wall and the stage floor. An enormous veil. Perhaps a dress? Perhaps a sheet? Alternately white, muted red, or bright green, depending on the moment and the character’s evolution. This veil (this veil?) envelops Suzanne Simonin, a bastard child locked away in a convent cell to atone for her mother’s sin.
She is alone on stage, haunted by the voices that oppress her and have driven her to the cloister. The voices of oppression—those of mothers, foremost among them her own, who hopes for her own redemption by sending her daughter to the convent—and those of the “mother superiors” of the communities within which she is confined. In this struggle against confinement, a contested identity, and unjust condemnation, she reveals the intimate spaces of her memory, with its vulnerabilities, certainties, and anger.
Twenty years after the text’s first staging, Anne Théron once again takes on her free adaptation of Diderot’s novel. Two and a half centuries after it was written, other convents, other transgressions, and other injustices resonate. The denunciation and the demand for justice remain. Actress Marie-Laure Crochant reprises the role, ensuring in turn the continuity and relevance of the struggle.
A production presented by Tangram, the national theater company
