Anissa is on stage, behind her baking pans and hot plates. She’s cooking (for real!). The aromas of toasted almonds and chocolate waft from her utensils and stoves. Soon the pralines will be ready to be handed out. Anissa is a mother of five who tells the story of her life. And what a life!
Anissa never knew her father, who left when she was born. Ahmed Madani, a playwright and director, encouraged her to follow in the footsteps of this absent father. He accompanied her, camera in hand, on this adventure. He is also by her side on stage. He listens, interjects, prompts, and explains. On a screen, we see close-ups of the cook in action, as well as elements that complement and authenticate her story. The audience is right there with them, bathed in the same light.
Is it the pastry chef herself telling us her true story? Or is it an actress telling us a story invented by the director at her side? Ahmed Madani plays with reality and fiction, biography and imagination. He invites the audience to participate, share their opinions, and ask questions.
It smells good and it intrigues. It surprises and it stirs things up.
